Then the model moved!

I suppose anyone who has attended a life drawing class will know the problem. You have just got the the outline of the model fixed on the page and everything is falling into the place and then the tutor decides that the model/students need a break. You come back and, try as you might, you just can't get the model into the right place so all that work you put in was for nothing. This is what happened last night so I ended up with a half finished work. Such is life's rich tapestry!

Well the new machine appears to be running ok...now I am trying to copy over the iTunes data which is easier said than done as the old laptop's files are in a real mess. I have a plan to overcome this which should work...I think/hope?

Hyper-realistic Painting by Omar Ortiz

I am not sure whether I have said this before on this blog but Why?   I am not trying to downplay the incredible skill that this artist has shown but beyond that what does it achieve?   This is not meant to be sour grapes on my part but these things just don't work for me.   However, I usually am wrong on most things so what do I know?

Life Painting

This painting was made this afternoon from life...which was a bit of a recovery as everything else I did in the class was, not to put too fine a point of it - crap.

Robert Lindsey

Just what make a good likeness of a person? I suppose the simple answer to that is that you can tell from the drawing/painting who the the person is. The other week I went to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters' annual exhibition and amongst some of the most lifeless portraits I have seen in a while there were two of Ken Clarke. One it was easy to make out who the sitter was the other, well lets just say less so. Yet there they were displayed next to one another, examples of the work of perhaps the most figurative group of painters you will ever find. So perhaps a good likeness is in eye of the beholder? Maybe. Over the past week or so I have been re-examining much of my work from last year as I struggle to create my 2011 year book. This process has demonstrated to me that time also has an effect. What I thought were good likenesses 12 months ago now I am not so sure of.

This brings me to this portrait sketch of the actor Robert Lindsey. This was a stop action moment which, under normal circumstances, would never have been captured. Yet I chose this instant to base a sketch on. Is this is a good likeness of the actor in general or just that moment? I am sorry I have no answer to any of these question but it is a notion that is floating around in my head - perhaps it should have stayed there?

Easy to blame the Germans. Smarter to learn from them | Andrew Rawnsley | Comment is free | The Observer

Another insightful comment from Rawnsley...perhaps before we complain about what others are doing wrong we should look in the mirror first.

Bellatrix Lestrange or Mrs Sweeney Todd? Or perhaps just Mrs Tim Button ~ Helena Bonham Carter

I had fun drawing this last night - it was based on the Sweeney Todd character but looking at it this morning I am not so sure which character it really represents. In reality none of them as I don't know what Helena Bonham Carter is like beyond what I have seen on the big screen - which is no true reflection of the real person - one only has to think of Rowan Atkinson and his relationship to Blackadder. Anyway I enjoyed drawing this which is that matters.

Viewing Freud

Well I managed to get see the Freud retrospective yesterday at the National Portrait Gallery and whilst some rooms were far too small for he people attending overall the management of crowds was acceptable. There has been so much written about the exhibition that I won't really add much more other than to say I found it really inspiring. As for the drawing/painting ( I do get confused as to what is the correct term when using oil pastels) well I had thought to say it was an attempt to follow Freud but that wouldn't be true but what the heck?

Trying a bit of Academic Drawing

A few weeks ago I picked up a wonderful catalogue of a 1991 exhibition called 'The Artist's Model ~ its role in British Art from Lely to Etty'. The book contains numerous prints of drawings made by artists of this period of the human form, either drawn from Life or The Antique. Now I don't wish to become a classical painter but there is something about understanding the human form if you want to develop as a human figurative artist - which is what really interests me above all else.

So I have found a classical pose photograph and intend to try and reproduce a drawing similar to some of the greats of 18th and 19th century British art. Nothing like setting one self up to fail but if you don't try you never progress. I suspect it will all end in tears!

Al Pacino as Lord Byron ~ After Irvin Penn

One of my all time favourite photographers is Irvin Penn - it is impossible for me to put in words the power of his imagery - so I decided to try and express my appreciation by attempting tp produce a similar work as a drawing - Al Pacino as Lord Byron. Well it didn't start off as this but it just grew, as these things tend to, into a gothic drawing. Well that is how I see it anyway.

Actually made a photograph!

20110515_-_blue_tit_composite

Well wonders alive - I have made a new photograph.   The actual images that were used for this composite were captured in May 2011 and it has taken me this long to get round to making the photograph they were intended for.   This is part of the process of gathering together a series of images for my overdue yearbook of 2011.  This book, once published will be transitional as over the past 12 months I have sold almost all of my photographic equipment.

Lets hope the book is as good as I hope.

Builders! They just make you want to scream!

I, like numerous people before, are having some building work done. On the whole the work is progressing well and seems to be of a really good standard. However, there is one aspect that is making me scream - the skip. The skip is sitting in our drive awaiting to be collected. It has been sitting there for almost a week waiting but still no show from the skip contractors. They promise the main builders that it will be collected in the morning and guess what - it wasn't. I complain to the project manager who complains to the skip contractors - nothing happens. It is enough to make you want to scream!
