The iPhone is dead - long live the iPhone

It had not been well for a few weeks now but finally it has died. My old iPhone is no more. Not bad going - just over 3 months of use and it dies. However, the good people at the Apple store quickly checked the machine out and replaced it straight away. Now that is what I call service.

So as usual the truth is not as straight forward as it seems. The iPhone still worked perfectly well - apart from the fact that the machine, for reasons passing comprehension thought that the head phones were attached and so the speaker for the phone wouldn't work - a bit difficult when trying to take a call.

The iPhone itself had been brilliant on my recent trip to Pembrokeshire. This is way beyond the reaches of 3G but the phone still worked a wonder as an Internet browser. All your really needed to do was set your favs to their low graphic option and away you go. In fact it is interesting that the BBC news website is much better without all the razzmatazz of web 2.0 design and functionality. It just gives you the news reports and really what do you want. Perhaps there is a moral there?

One final thing. Upgrading to v3.0 of the operating system. This works really well apart from those of us on pay as you go. We have to fiddle around with the data network settings. It is not difficult just tedious.

So the king is dead - long live the king.

Some more thoughts on the iPhone

Well it is nearly two months since I bought this phone and I have to say it has not disappointed.  I find it invaluable in my day to day life.   However, I have one problem which has meant that from time to time I have reverted back to my old phone.   When I am out in the countryside, well away from WiFi hotspots and 3G coverage is patchy, I find the phone very bulky.  This may sound bizarre as it is hardly the 'brick' of old.  No the problem is a I usually stuff my pockets with card holders lens etc and the phone just gets in the way.  My old Nokia, on the other hand, is small slim and less obtrusive.  I suspect that the Nokia might also be a little bit more robust to the bumps and bangs when shooting in the countryside so in these circumstances I revert to the old phone.   Apart from this 'out of envelope' set of circumstances I would be lost without my iPhone.

Living with the iPhone

Well I have had the iPhone for over a week now and I am starting to learn lessons from living with it.   The first thing to say is that I have no idea what it is like to use as a phone.   This may seem strange as it is supposed to be a phone but I really didn't buy it for that.  I bought it so that I can have internet access wherever I might be.   I have used it as a phone but I don't find it any better or worse than any other - however, I am not a big phone person so my views on this are not really that important.

No what is really impressive is the internet access.   This has changed my life in so many small ways.   You watch a programme on TV and you want to know where you have seen an actor before - well the iPhone quickly gives you access to IMDB.  I know you can do this with a lap top, PC or Mac but I don't always have one of those at hand.  The iPhone is.   

The phone works its best on WiFi but the 3G is not too bad.   But this is not the point.  It is the ease of use that is the key - the ability just to pick it up and quickly use the thing.  This is definitely one of my best buys in a while.
