Wagner and the fat lady

So I am drawing fat ladies today. God that sounds patronising - especially as I am a fat man so am in no position to say anything. Well yes and no. The no because I am fascinated by the folds and curves - perhaps it is very primeval as most fertility goddess would not be considered models for any Milan fashion house yet they were seen as the embodiment of womanhood and renewal.

Anyway, before I disappear into pseuds corner back to the drawing. This part of an expansion of the portraits into full figures. As a first step this isn't top bad. I also find taking a photo helps me see things that I may have missed - such as one of the hands - although I am not so sure!

So to Wagner. I like to listen to classical music whilst working and at the moment Wagner is my composer of choice. The only problem with this is that will always associate him with Hitler and the third reich. Still I am not sure that the valkerye were fat ladies but rather amazonians - but that is another story.

Breaking news - Hillary Clinton's Nose has been found

Well I managed to make the likeness. It was hard work - this took the best part of two hours to draw - but eventually I have achieved what I set out to do. Well almost - I'm never happy with the exults and no doubt I will work on this a bit more but it is a great improvement at the first attempt and this, of course, is a really good lesson in itself. I couldn't have produced this without the earlier sketch. Producing art appears to be much the same as any other exercise - the more you practice the better you get. You always strive to improve, whatever that might mean to you.

So I am happyish with this and the Secretary of State is reunited with her nose. Now you the next phase of this mad cap idea.

Clinton's missing nose

As part of the search for the missing nose I decided to trace out the photograph to see if I could learn anymore about the face. I didn't but I found the whole thing a bit of fun.

The scene of the crime - the missing Clinton nose

Hillary Clinton's nose. I can't find it

Well I'm back on portraits and I am trying to make a likeness of the former first lady and now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. This is part of an idea I am working on which, if it is like many of my other ideas, will never get finished! Be that as it may, the first part is that I need to make a portrait of the afore mentioned Secretary of State. I have managed a reasonable first stab at it apart from the nose - I just don't seem to be able to get nose right. This is really frustrating - I know I will eventually find the nose but at the moment it is nowhere to be found. Wow when did that happen? I feel confident that I will find a solution, not I will never find a solution but rather it is only a matter of time. Now that is progress.

In the meantime I will search forlornly for Ms Clinton's nose - now I bet that's not to be found in the Wikileaks documents.

Experimenting with Linda

Over the past few months I have drawn Linda many times.   Today I have revisited this face for a new type of art work for me - painting.   I would love to write that this part of some great plan but it wasn't.  I wanted some large oil pastels and bought a set not realising what I could do with them.  However, once I read the instructions, a first, I discovered that these pastels were water soluble so I decided to try this out.  Enter Linda.

I first sketched out an outline - which took about 15 minutes.  I mention this because when I last drew Linda I never really managed to  a good likeness whereas now I can do this within 15 minutes.  That is a measure of the progress I have made over the past few months.

So to the pastels.  I was a bit tentative at first working from the light to dark.  As my confidence grew I started to apply more pressure.  Once I had finished it was an interesting drawing but only stage two.  Now for the real test - applying water.   Again I was really nervous to start off but slowly I got a bit of feel for what I was doing and slowly the painting began to take shape.

Overall I am really pleased with the result.  Now I am not saying it is any good but it does give a lot things to think about when I do it again.   This is the only way to learn and improve your work just keep working and reflecting.

Another Frozen Image

Sitting down and clear a bit of a back log - well that is the plan however I want to do some drawing so I might finish the backlog today or ever!   Mentioning drawing I have found that I am starting to move away from straight recreation of the scene to a more subtle approach.  I am now looking for something that I find interesting rather than trying to conform to other people's rules.  In short I suspect many of my new images will never be able to be entered into mainstream competitions as they have been digitally manipulated.   No matter.

Worth the cold

Well I have started to work on my photos from the past couple of days.  These are part of a side project of tress I hope to mount on a wall in the house.  I am quite happy with how things are developing so perhaps donning all those warm cloths was worth it.

Freezing my wotsits off

My word it was cold today - according to the thermometer in the car it was - 4c and this was at lunchtime.  Now I know by Russian standards this is nothing but for me it was still cold.   I drove through the winter wonderland this afternoon and stopped occasionally to take some photographs.  The only problem was that it was so cold it was painful to hold the camera for too long - perhaps I should have put my gloves on!   Anyway, just uploaded the photographs and over the next few days I will start working on them.  Not sure whether I like what I have produced so far - they seem a little chocolate boxish.

Venturing even further into Apple World

Well I have taken an even bigger step into Steve Jobs clutches - I've signed up for MobileMe.   There were a few teething problems in the set up - the latest is that the default time zone is West Coast USA - which I suspect says a lot about Apple's world view.

So I have started my 60 day free trial.  I wonder how it will all end.

One final thing.  The iPad is now behaving itself.  I am not sure whether it was the restore to factory settings or the latest iTunes/OS upgrade that has sorted it or perhaps some, as yet, undiscovered reason.  Whatever it was it has worked and the iPad is better than before - although I am not sure I like the folders facility much.  Computers Huh - who'd have em?

Resorted to Restore

Well nothing was happening with the iPad so I have restored it to factory settings.  this is going to be a bit of a bind but hopefully I will be able to control what does and does not go on the iPad and make it work properly with iTunes on my PC.  Well that is the plan and I have every confidence that it will go wrong along the way.  I thought Apple products were supposed to be superior to anything else!  Ah this is an old argument which I know is worthless to pursue.

Updating the iPad software

Well I have taken the plunge and decided to update the iPad software.   All seems to have been going fine until the update procedure started to backup the iPad.  As I write this things seem to have stopped - perhaps I am suffering from paranoia but this has been the problem with the iPad all along.   We'll just have to see what happens.   If this stalls then the only thing left is to restore to factory settings which I am prepared to do.  I have been clearing out all my Brushes drawings so that if I have to restore I don't loose anything.  Lets just hope it doesn't come to this.

God the noise!

Well the restaurant maybe a feast for the eye but it assaults the ears! It is like having lunch in swimming pool with a 1000 young kids playing in the pool. Deafening! To top it all someone is murdering the piano in the corner. Whilst this a great idea in principle in practice it just makes a bad situation worst. Clearly the Victorians weren't too concerned with acoustics - form triumphs over function.

Making progress and taking my time

Well I finally got up enough courage to work on the drawing I started a couple of days ago.   After one or two false starts I think it is working out really well.  Of course there are many things I am not happy with it, some I suspect a product of the material I am using and some my lack of technique.   Both of these deficiencies I hope will be overcome with time and practice.  Well I suppose you have to live in hope.

I am also letting the whole process take time.  Not too long ago I would have rushed in and called the drawing finished but I am learning that speed is possibly one of my greatest problems.   Just take my time and keep thinking about what I am doing and hopefully things will get better.

Anyway, I am feeling pretty good with myself.  Let's hop this continues.

Christmas comes but once a year...so they say

Any one who has been to Disney World Market Place knows that this is not true - Christmas is a festival that just keeps giving - to the Disney Corp - all year around.  However, for the rest of us the great Christmas buying spree is just about to start.  And so to mark this - well actually we have just put the tree up - I have made this photograph.  I suspect over the next three weeks I will be making many more!

Work in progress

I find it fascinating to record a drawing being made, just how does something change over time as you work on it?   I suspect that this may say more about the drawing than the final result or perhaps it is like sausage making - you don't want to see how they are made but want to enjoy the final results.  I am not sure which at the moment.

Anyway, I am recording the progress I am making creating this drawing of WH Auden.   So far this week I have been concentrating on female beauty and form - two things Auden did not processes - certainly as he grew old.   I saw this face the other day and I knew I had to draw it.  So far it has taken me the best part of five hours to get to this point and I suspect it is only about a quarter finished.   At this rate it should be completed by sometime next week.  It really is a challenge and at the same time deeply satisfying.  I just hope I don't screw things up - at least I'll have the photographs to remind me how much I screwed things up.

My god - I have been making some photographs...

Wot no iPhone?!  Yes it is true I am able to use a 'real' camera as well.   It has been snowing for several days and I finally decided to get out there and make some photographs - with my 5D.  I say make as the camera was the only the first step in the whole process.   The resultant images are merges - some might describe them as High Dynamic Range (HDR) images but I find that whole idea just a little over used.   I made these using a number of techniques - however each image was created from three separate images, one stop under normal exposure and one stop over - but I wouldn't call these HDR - just images I made.

Now that is what I call splitting hairs!

With age comes wisdom...

I have no idea whether this is a coined saying or something I have made up.  I am starting to realise that the only thing you get as you get old are aches and pains where you never thought there were any.  However, experience does appear to have a beneficial effect on wisdom or at least understanding of a subject, whatever that might be.

This week I have been trying to capture the female form.   I have had problems capturing the female face as well as the body.  I have tried to attack this from two fronts - drawing nudes and faces.   To an extent I have had some success but I can do better.   The wisdom I have acquired along the way is that there is no rush.  In the past I have worked on a drawing for half an hour and then moved on to something else.   However, I have now realised that I am missing on important aspect - reflection.  By this I mean starting something and then going away and doing something else and then coming back to it and looking at what you have done.  In short I have started to give myself time to look and review.  And guess what my drawings have improved.

Now whether this is a lucky happens-chance or a sign of maturity I have no idea.  I suppose all those aches and pains mean you can't rush around as much as you did and so it does mean you can reflect a little more.

Pregnant Women

I am very interested in the creative process - just how did the artist come to the answers he/she has?  I am also very insecure about loosing 'good' drawings by later attempts to alter/improve/change the drawing.  So with this in mind I have made a series of photographs of the drawing of a pregnant woman during it's own journey from conception to delivery.   This is part of the reflective learning process I am using to try and improve on my work.

Searching for the perfect proportions

What an interesting evening I have just had.  I have been researching the perfect body proportions.  Perfect is a very loaded term I know so perhaps I should say I was looking for examples of male and female bodies that meet the classic western art proportions.

As with all things images the first stop has to be Google.  Well you can just image the images you get when undertake search such as Nude Male Standing.   Anyway once I had worked through the porn it became clear that there was a certain amount of squimishness amongst the on line stock photo libraries to show the penis.   They have no problems with full frontal nudity when it comes to women but men, well they just have to cover the their penis in either the pose or a discreetly placed hand.

Now I am sure you can read a whole lot into this, perhaps the female nude form is considered more attractive than the male.  Or perhaps it is really sexism at it's most powerful at work. I have no idea but it just struck me as strange that there should be such attitudes.

As for the search - well I managed to obtain the images and will try and draw them over the next few days.  This is not an exercise in anything other than working on the human form - trying to draw something that looks like a human with correct proportions.  Well that is the plan - I am not sure how it will work out.

The silence and the fury

Oh how I wish I had the photograph that this drawing is based on. It is from a series of photographs that Paul Fusco made in 2000 at a protest in New York city over the death of a suspect shot by the NYPD. It is full of power and outrage and sadness. Now my drawing is a pale interpretation but I have used this as a means to try and explore the use light and shade - chiaroscuro. I am happy that this a first stab at the approach but I have a huge amount to learn about control the medium. As the saying goes ' every journey starts with the first step...'. This is mine.

Working with the iPhone in Walsall

yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away...  well according to the Beatles that is.  Actually yesterday all my troubles seemed to be baring down on top of me - now this is quite so.  Anyway, even with my state of mind I went out and captured a couple of more images with the iPhone.   I am playing with the idea of making a book based on the view from art gallery windows.  The motivation/idea behind this is that when you go into an art gallery you are not allowed to take any pictures - not entirely sure what the galleries are trying to prevent but there you are.  So I have started to take photographs out of the windows of galleries and they do make up an interesting set of photographs.  Anyway, these are the two I have chosen from Walsall Art Gallery.

Yipee I'm back on line

Order has been restored. The Internet has been reestablished in my small little corner of the world. Funny thing is I was just starting to get use to living a short while with out it. There were a lot of small jobs that had been put off were being lined up to be worked on over the next day or so - now I guess they will remain undone.

I have also learnt, well had it reinforced actually, that I can no longer deal with disturbances in my calm life. There was a time when was not so but those who know me that my recent medical history means this is no longer so. In short I am shrinking violet inside my hulking body. Oh the joys of my life.

Living without the Internet

I know I am still posting but at the moment I have no Internet. I am having to rely on my iPhone and 3G - not perfect but it will have to do at the moment.

You forget how all pervasive Internet connectivity can be - especially as I have been on line since 1995 - and forget the iPad with without wifi is really not that good.

The tech support will be here this afternoon so let's hope they sort things out - otherwise it is down to BT and goodness knows how long they will take to check the line. Back to the 90's, runs on currencies, financial melt down and a conservative government - oh god help us all!

Working in the studio

Well I m hard at in the studio. My that makes me sound like a proper artist. Well I suppose I should describe my studio - it is a small space in the garage but it is all I need at the moment and the light is really good which is the most important thing.

I moved out to the garage when I started to use charcoal - something you can't really use in the house - well not the way I use it anyway - with force.

I actually find it quite good to have a small cluttered space. As the winter gets colder I might even invest in some heating. Perhaps.

iPhone and Street Photography

The iPhone is a great camera to use for street photography.   It appears that when you take a large camera out in public many people become apprehensive yet don't give the iPhone a second look.   Now it is for others to judge whether the results I have obtained are any good, and to be quite honest I am only trying to please myself so if others find the work interesting then that is a bonus.

Anyway, I suggest that people get out there and start to use their iPhone, or any other camera phone for that matter, and see what they can capture - it can be really rewarding.

Busy few days.

Well I have had a busy few days.  The weekend was the newly formed East Midland Contemporary group meeting - where I was appointed the author of our new blog -

This is taking a while to set up and perfect but really interesting work - brings back fond??? memories of my project management days.

On top of this I gave a talk to the Sheepy Magna/Parva history group - about the historical research project I am working on.

On top of all this I am continuing my artistic development work as well as trying to fit in some iPhoneography.

I'm really not use to this level of activity.  Well that is not true - it is not too long ago when I would have considered that this was the norm for a morning's work - let alone a week.  This, however, had a very bad effect on my health so I don't want to repeat that again!

Incredible skills - but why?

What an incredible technician Jamie Boots is. He produces photo realistic drawings of animals from photographs. There, for me, is the problem - why? Why not just use the photo?
